Solar Club™ Members Set a New Standard With Record Earnings of $26 Million!
When we introduced the Solar Club seven years ago, our goal was simple but ambitious: give solar photovoltaic (PV) system homeowners a meaningful way to participate in, and benefit from, the province’s evolving energy market. Several years later, that idea has grown into a powerful, Member‑driven success story. 2025 saw not only record earnings, but the program also marked the addition of our 10,000th Member. Here’s a look at how Solar Club Members continue to push boundaries and deliver outstanding results.
A Milestone Year for Members
For the second consecutive time, Solar Club Members achieved a collective net‑positive result in a single year based solely on electricity exports to the grid. When you add together export credits, cash back, and Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), the total value returned to Members reached a staggering $26 million for 2025! Since launch, cumulative earnings have reached nearly $60 million, clear proof that community‑powered solar works.
The Four Pillars of the Solar Club
The Solar Club is built on four core principles that guide everything we do:
Improving ROI
Through competitive rates, a robust cash back program, and opportunities to benefit from environmental attributes such as carbon credits, Members continue to improve the returns on their solar investments.
Achieving Net Zero
By aggregating Members’ exports, the Solar Club can achieve climate-neutral, or even climate‑positive outcomes at a collective level.
Measurable Environmental Impact
Our original commitment to export 100 million kWh of renewable electricity into Alberta’s grid by 2030 was surpassed in 2025. Building on that momentum, last year we increased that target to 250 million kWh of exported energy by 2030. However, our Members continue to exceed even our wildest expectations, and we are on track to smash that goal yet again. As such, we’ve set another new goal of half a billion kWh (500 million kWh) by 2030.
Promoting Renewables
By pairing solar exports with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), Members help accelerate the transition to cleaner electricity across the province.
Momentum That Keeps Building
Over the past year, Solar Club Members continued to raise the bar:
- Exported 100 million kWh of clean, renewable electricity to Alberta’s grid in a single year.
- Reached a cumulative total of 230 million kWh exported since 2019— nearly achieving our expanded 250 million kWh goal by 2030.
- Maintained a climate‑positive energy position, exporting more electricity (plus RECs) than was imported by 11 million kWh.
Financially, it was a standout year. Members received a total value of $26 million, made up of:
- $25.6M from electricity exported to the grid;
- $398,000 in cash back, more than double last year’s amount;
- $30,000 in Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).
Every dollar earned helps shorten payback periods, strengthen the business case for solar, and reinforce the value of acting together.
Cash Back That Pays Off
As highlighted above, Members will soon receive their annual cash back payments, a record‑setting $398,000 distributed directly to households. Calculated as a percentage of electricity imported over the year, this program rewards Members for choosing solar and supporting Alberta’s clean‑energy future.
Members who registered their battery EVs with the Solar Club further increased their cash back payments through an additional 2% on electricity and bundled natural gas.
The Hummingbird Virtual Solar Community
All microgenerators enrolled with us, whether Solar Club Members or not, are part of the Hummingbird Virtual Solar Community (VSC). Together, they form one of Alberta’s largest distributed solar “farms,” and a powerful example of what collective action can achieve.
Today, the Hummingbird VSC represents more than 250,000 installed solar modules with a combined capacity of over 150 MW. Powered by Alberta sunshine and homeowner commitment, it stands as a cornerstone of the Solar Club’s mission to build a cleaner, more resilient energy system.
Investing Back Into Alberta Communities
Giving back remains central to who we are. In the last year, Energy Marketers offering Solar Club rates donated more than $1 million to support over 40 charitable organizations, ranging from food banks to mental health and social‑service initiatives, as well as municipalities throughout Alberta. Municipality-based Energy Marketers leverage their funds to support economic development in their local regions. Since 2019, total community donations have reached nearly $3.5 million, showing how local energy choices can create local impact.
Additionally, we launched a new partnership with WWF-Canada, committing a $30,000 donation. You can read more about it here.
Added Improvements
At the Solar Club, improvement is ongoing. We’re constantly evolving the program by introducing new features and benefits designed to help Members get the most value from their participation, today and into the future.
That commitment was on full display in 2025 by rolling out several meaningful enhancements, such as:
- Pre-Bill™: Early access to upcoming billing data, so Members can review their usage and charges before their bill is finalized. No more gambling with switch dates.
- Solar Stats: A monthly report accessible through the My Account portal, delivering personalized insights into each Member’s solar production and energy activity.
- RateSwitch™: Automatic rate switching that ensures Members are always on the most advantageous electricity rate. Optimization has never looked so good.
- New HI Rate: We increased the HI Rate to 33¢/kWh, a new seasonal peak to help Members accelerate their return on investment.
- EV Cash Back: We added 2% cash back for Members who own a battery electric vehicle, rewarding cleaner transportation choices.
Solar Show 2026
As proud sponsors of Solar Alberta’s annual Solar Show, we continue to support this multi‑day event that celebrates innovation, education, and connection across the solar industry. It’s a must‑attend opportunity to learn, share ideas, and meet others shaping Alberta’s renewable future.
We are proud to sponsor the Solar 101: Solar for Your Home or Business session on January 27th, and to have our very own Darren Chu present as a panelist on the January 28th session, Optimizing Your Solar Array.
The event is free to attend, and you can get your tickets here.
More Sunny Days Ahead
The outlook for solar in Alberta continues to strengthen year after year. Thank you for being part of the Solar Club and for helping transform an ambitious idea into measurable results. With sustained momentum and an engaged member community, the path ahead is full of opportunity. Together, we’re advancing Alberta’s energy transition, putting power back in homeowners’ hands, and building a cleaner future: one kilowatt-hour at a time.
