Frequently Asked Questions

Flipping the Switch: FAQs on Changing Your Solar Energy Provider

How do I become a Solar Club Member?2024-03-27T12:30:43-06:00

Easy! Simply apply for a Solar Club rate through one of our Community Energy Marketers.

Not ready yet? Simply apply for one of our variable or fixed rates and then switch to a Solar Club rate once your system has been activated.

What is the HI rate for? What is the LO rate for?2025-09-24T17:23:01-06:00

The HI Rate is designed for micro-generators who are generating more energy than they are using. This is typically used during the summer months (March to October).

The LO Rate is designed for micro-generators who are using more energy than they are generating. This is typically used during the winter months (November to February).

When should I switch between rates, and how do I switch rates?2025-09-24T17:23:38-06:00

Switching rates usually depends on your generation/usage patterns, but most micro-generators switch from the Variable or LO Rate to the HI Rate in the spring, and from the HI Rate to the LO or Variable Rate in the fall.

You can use our Pre-Bill Feature which provides you with a glimpse of your export and import data BEFORE your invoice is produced so that you know if you need to submit a rate change request. You’ll receive a Pre-Bill Notification Email three business days before your invoice is finalized so that you can make the switch if your data indicates that would be best.

You can backdate your rate change as far back as your last meter read date.

What is Pre-Bill and how does it work?2025-09-24T17:27:26-06:00

Every month, you will receive a Pre-Bill Notification Email three business days before your invoice is finalized (your Publish Date). During this Pre-Bill Window, log in to your “My Account” portal to view your:

  • Export kWh
  • Import kWh
  • Net kWh

The Net kWh value will tell you when you’re a net exporter or a net importer. Members typically use the HI Rate when they are net exporters. Members typically use the LO or Variable Rates when they are net importers.

During the spring and fall, when you normally switch rates, watch for a change from net importer to net exporter, or vice-versa. When your net status changes, submit a rate change request from the “My Account” portal. Your Pre-Bill Data will also show you the “backdating” date you can select to optimize your credits.

Can I really choose a switch date that has occurred in the past?2024-04-10T13:22:41-06:00

Yes, you can! You can switch rates as far back as your last billing cycle, so be sure to take advantage of this time-travelling superpower and use it to maximize the days when your solar panels were capturing the most sunshine!
